It seems like a very simple system, right? Fat is composed of calories. Calories are taken in via food, and burned off via activity or exercise, so the logical conclusion is that if you take in less calories and burn more calories, you add less fat onto your body - or, ideally, even burn fat off of your body! Simple, right? One might even say easy.
Well, if you've ever tried to implement that "simple" and "easy" system - and yes, I did put those quotes there on purpose - then you know it's anything but simple, and the furthest thing from easy.
The reason for the monkey wrench in this otherwise beautiful system? A little thing known as cravings.
That's right. You know what cravings are, right? Silly question if you've ever been on a diet. Cravings are the almost undeniable compulsion to eat, and not just eat, but eat certain types of foods that are diet killers. High sugar foods, high fat foods, and high calorie foods. Cravings can be so strong that it can literally feel like you will die if you don't give in to them. How can that compare to whatever reasons you're dieting for. The abstract idea of being healthier? Of looking better? Those concepts can pale in comparison with the strength of a craving.
This is why you need to keep track of every morsel you put in your mouth. Not only food, but drinks as well. And keep a detailed journal of when the cravings hit so you can backtrack to what you ate several hours before. A pattern will begin to emerge, and you will find out what your personal trigger foods are.
